Archaeology: A viking blacksmith

A thousand years ago, more or less, a norse blacksmith reached the end of his life-journey and at his funeral rites, his tools were buried with him. Now, archaeology found his burial place and the artefacts buried with him. The findings give us insight into the work and status of a blacksmith in the viking society of old.

The grave was composed of several layers. It seems, according to the archaeologists , that the placement of the artefacts in the grave signify a relative status. At the top it has been found the blacksmith tools. An axe was also found, along with a sword and some agricultural implements. Deeper down were the blacksmith’s personal items, including a razor, scissors (for trimming his beard, perhaps), tweezers, a frying pan and a poker. The grave contained about sixty artefacts. At the very bottom it was found the cremated remains of a human being – it was the blacksmith, of course. There were other personal items; some beads that had been attached to his clothing and a comb made of bone.

It may be possible that the blacksmith's contemporaries wished to show how skilful he was in his work by including such an extensive amount of objects; he might have forged many of these tools himself even.

It is interesting to see that during the Viking Age, people still had great respect for blacksmiths. Tamers of fire, who could create objects controlling this wild and dangerous element, molding metal and making a perfect union between earth (the metals it gives), fire, and water and air (which are also needed while forging). The use of the four elements by one single person, and the control of those same elements; blacksmiths in old times must have been seen like some kind of sorcerers.

The joy of creating objects, by controlling the elements and using both strength and delicacy, must be a wonderful therapy.

Going under the cloak

There are many processes that lead to spiritual work or just relaxation of the mind. This one is such a process, and I would like to share it with you, for it is very simple, but requires a lot of mind control. It is easier if you already know the basic steps of meditation.

As the title suggests, this is literally going under the cloak or a blanket, basically any piece of cloth that you can use to cover you whole. This process of relaxation can be done in short periods of time or long ones, depending on how further you want your mind to go, to delve into a different state of mind.
Do this exercise, get yourself a blanket, lie underneath it and you may or may not use an heavy object such as a rock, to help you in the process of freeing your mind. I'm speaking of rocks because the Druids used to do such things, placing a rock on the chest in order to depress the breathing to alter the state of mind. The heavy object can't be too heavy, or it will end up hurting you, o you will be very uncomfortable, but nether can it be too soft, or you will end up sleeping.

Pay attention, this process must not be performed by people inexperienced, even those used to alter their state of mind with such processes, must be accompanied by a crew able to monitor the pulse and breathing of the person.

The objective of being under a cloak, is to experience a different type of being all by yourself, as if in a cocoon or the "return" to the womb. Peaceful and quiet. Even if you choose to be by yourself in a room, with windows closed, in total darkness, there is always light in the room, light always finds a way to get in, so if you do this process, but under a cloak, you will experience a new kind of darkness, after a while, you will not even realize where you are.

Sauna - The House Of The Ancestors

The Sauna is a very old spiritual tradition, especially for the European peoples. Throughout history we find that the Northern European cultures have an important connection with the sauna. Archaeology in northern Portugal and Spain also found that the Celts and the Lusitanians used to have buildings similar to their houses only for the purpose of cleansing the body through heat and vapours. Nowadays it isn't hard to get into a sauna, but unfortunatelly modern saunas are very different from the old saunas that were used for religious purposes.

The first purpose of the sauna is to honor the powers of the elements, fire, water and stone (earth) and how the spirits of such elements together make "magic", creating steam, thought to be the very breath of the earth and the ancestors. Without these elements, the spirits will not come to you.

For religious purposes, the sauna must have a good source of heat from wood with real flame (nowadays modern saunas have the source of heat through an electric sistem). Also, there is the need of adding stones, most modern saunas have them, as long as there is wood and real flame, it is fine. Now, something very important that isn't taken to account by the people who build modern saunas. Ventilation. Many modern saunas make people sick because the oxygen levels fall too low. Any type of opening will do, the fire needs oxygen to "breath". The best way is having an adjustable vent near the floor, to vent the cooling sinking air, and another higher up to vent the excess heat that follows later.
Also, like I've written, having stones, to throw water on them. Don't pick up river stones, usualy blow apart during temperature changes. You will also need water of course. Our ancestors used to collect the rainwater for these purpose, coming from the sky, it was a direct blessing from the deities. The type of wood used to come from the birch trees, I believe that I have already written about the birch tree in another post, those were consider to be very magical in many cultures, especially the ones ruled by a druidic order.

Do whatever you want in the sauna, but know that the real purpose of it, wasn't to party, so if you really want to do any type of spiritual work, you must behave of course. Being in a sauna, one must be quiet, meditative, peaceful, solemn. This is an opportunity to be in touch with the spirits of the elements, a rebirth ritual, so our ancestors used to go into the sauna, completly naked, the way they came into the world, deprived of any clothing.

Of course people may feel shy for being naked in a community sauna, that is understandable, but modern community saunas don't have the ancestral spiritual purposes. Community saunas used to be mixed gender, however, some rituals during the year only for men or for women, were held inside the sauna (at least part of the rituals) so in that case, the sauna was occupied by only one gender.

The first saunas were made out of stone, but during the later 5th - 6th centuries, these were being built our of timber. The hearth was considered to be the altar of the sauna (the sauna being the temple/house of the ancestors).
The door to a traditional sauna used to be shorter than a an average door, people had to stoop to get into it, showing reverence for the ancestors.

The very first saunas were smoke saunas, the Finns refer to them as savusauna. The fire was lit under stones, and the smoke went out through a hole in the wall or ceiling. The smoke heated the entire room and then the hole was shut and the window opened to let in fresh air come in. There are different claims on the health risks of these smoke saunas, or savusauna. Some say that the smoke is bad for your lungs, others that the smoke creates a bacteria-free and oxygen-rich environment. Don't try these in any circumstances if you are new at this or alone, these might be better in community and with someone outside the door.

The traditional ways of making fire for the sauna, would take long (compared to modern ways of course, it wasn't that long) but it would take longer to get the sauna ready for the spiritual purpose, so people used to sit outside and play the shamanic instruments to call upon a spirit to enter the sauna. In some cases, people would also wait for a family member to die in or near the sauna, so they would be able to call upon them during the sauna rituals.

Our ancestors would call upon guardian spirits to protect them. There was/is one very popular in Finland, named Saunatonttu, a little gnome or sort of faery. It was customary to warm up the sauna just for the gnome every now and then, or to leave some food outside for him. It is said that he warned the people if a fire was threatening the sauna, or punished people who behaved improperly while inside it. The Saunatonttu doesn't seem to be an Alfar (Elf) but more like a being that belongs to the "little people" race. In Russia there was the Bannik or banyanka, also a spirit that protected people from evil spirits. Our ancestors would take refuge in the bath houses and saunas to pray to these spirits for protection.

The purpose of the sauna was to honor the ancestors, to call upon the spirits for protection and to be connected with them and the elements of nature, creating the very breath of the earth, ancestors and gods. Through this "breath" one would cleanse the body and soul.

Logi The Spirit of Fire

Since we humans have developed the ability to be in contact with the spirit world, we have given names to what we have seen. The first names were given to the spirits of the elements and that isn't different in the Norse tradition. One of the most powerful fire-spirits of the Norse mythology is called Logi. Mythology says that Logi is the second son of the frost giant called Mistblindi or sometimes called Fornjotr. The eldest brother of Logi is a Norse deity called Kari, the god of the northern winds. The youngest brother is Aegir, the king of the sea, older than Njörd.

One of the most heard tales of the adventures of the Norse gods is the one when Thor and Loki go into Utgard and enter different contests with Utgardens-Loki, trying to win against many family members and friends of Utgard-Loki, in a series of random contests. In this story, Logi the fire spirit appears, entering the food contest against Loki and winning. No one knew who he was, but he devoured the meal, the bones, the plates and even the table. Later he was revealed as Logi the old god of fire.

One of Logi's names is Halogi, meaning "High-Logi", it seems that this spirit is very tall. Logi's wife is Glut (glow) and she bore him two daughters so called Einmyria and Eisa, translating to "Ashes" and "Embers". Logi, of course, lives in Muspelheim, the realm of fire.

As it is seen many times in both norse mythology and celtic, there are many deities that come in three, a magical triplicity, such as Odin and his two brothers Vili and Vé, with Logi we also see this magical triplicity with his own brothers and himself, Kari the eldest, Logi and Aegir the youngest, Wind, Fire and Water (sea). These deities are really old, older than Odin. It is possible that there three deities might be linked to the myth of creation, a myth that predates the Aesir and the Vanir.

Logi and his two brothers make the triplicity of the primal elements working in earth, as the sea (water) itself interacts with the earth, and of course the fire and wind that help shaping worlds. These deities no doubt were once linked to the magical quadriplicity of the natural elements of fire, air, earth and water, in a time before the creation of the myth of Odin, in a time before we humans gave an anthropomorphic shape to the spirits.

Bronze Age Medicine House

In the Irish countryside and in Northern Portugal, among so many buildings of the Bronze and Iron ages, it has been found some really interesting buildings with the same function as the Sweat tents so well known among the Lakota indians of Northern America, known as Medicine Lodges or Medicine Houses. These buildings like anyother similar ancient constructions in Finland, Sibéria, and other countries where Saunas existed, have the same function of ritual purification and to communicate with the spirits. These houses are all very similar in the way they work, a simple hole in the ground with tree trunks covered with earth and stones. In Northern Portugal and Galicia, both on Portuguese and Spanish soil, such buildings were found, dated from the Bronze and Iron Ages, when the Celts and the Celtic tribe of the Lusitanians lived there, it is known that these people took at least two steam baths per week, but this wasn't just to clean the body, in truth it was more for religious and spiritual practices, for the purification of the body and to interact with the spirits of the elements, of fire, water, air and earth, all combined in one place and making steam, this also helped enter in trance and actually communicate with other spirits. After this long bath, making the body sweat and all the impurities of the body cleansed in a way to protect oneself from evil beings, the person would dive in cold water of the near by well or river to wash away any negativity in the body.
Nowadays we know about the ancient practices and even the rituals that take place in such occasions, because shamanic tribes still exist and use the same method, but unfortunatelly we don't know what kind of sacred ritual was performed during these ceremonies in the Celtic culture, but it is interesting to see that worldwide people share the same habits, and that many European countries even share the same type of architectural style and the buildings have exactly the same function.
To know more about these ancient European practices we have to take a close look to the similar practices of the North American indians, or the Siberian peoples, to have a little idea about these steam baths with spiritual purposes, because unfortunatelly with the coming of Christianity, there practices were also banned, what seems to be a simple steam bath, was indeed a cause to pursuit those who did it.
It is possible that people might add hallucinogenic herbs in the process, so the steam might help to induce trance, some Indo-European tribes did it, and also the Eurasian tribe of the Scythians did it and there are accounts of it because their kingdoms spread all the way to Bulgaria.

Working with the gods: Surt

We have all heard about Muspellheim, one of the nine realms in the Norse cosmology but it isn't a famous place as much as Asgard is for exemple, people tend to stick with the knowledge most appealing to them, we know better about the beautiful landscapes and beings of Asgard or Vanaheim or even Álfheim because those are places of light and beauty, of magic and wondrous powers, but all the other realms are equally important. What ever you might know of Muspellheim, the first thing you need to know is about the deity who rules over that realm.
Muspellheim is the eternal land of Fire where the fire-etins live, their king is Surt / Surtur the Black , whose sword gave the first sparks to create all the other realms, and it is said that he is the oldest living being in all the nine realms, few have seen him and even fewer had the opportunity to meet him, but for those who have, they have shared their knowledge with us and i am here today to talk about Surt as a contribution to the vast lore of the Norse/Germanic pagan traditions.

Surt is the king of fire, the supreme deity who has turned all his powers to the fire element in the Norse Mythology, he is also the king of all the fire-giants/etins and his realm is Muspellheim. We know about Ginnungagap, the great vast blackness of the universe and the only existing thing in the beginning and Surt appeared out of that blackness with his flaming sword eventually creating the land of Fire called Muspellheim which in some time got close enough with the realm of ice Niflheim and as such, the frozen earth melted revealing Ymir the primal frost-giant and Audhumla the great cow. Thus life was created in such matter, the meeting of fire with ice in the Norse mythology. Surt's children had connections with Ymir's children and they mixed their bloodlines. Surt was the only living thing in the beginning, lighting all that blackness with his great sword Laevateinn, and he is the oldest living being also, unfortunately, no one knows where he came from or how, or what brought him, but it is interesting to know that the element of fire and of ice is indeed the first things to appear in the creation of any planet, and so he is the very symbol of creation.
Most people don't know, but Surt is the godfather of Loki and raised him as his own son, as it is told in Loki's birth tale, when his mother Laufey came to Muspellheim to give birth to him when running away from the most powerful clans of Jotunheim after defeating Farbauti, Loki's father.
Surt is a powerful being, having the knowledge about all kind of fires, even the primal fires from which stars and worls are made of, he knows about the energy of such fires and the power of heat.
In the lore, it is said if Ragnarök comes to pass, Surt will rise up with the legions of Hela's dead beings and attack Asgard, and if that happens, Surt will kill Freyr who gave up his sword for love, after that, much of the world will be consumed by flames and Surt will rebirth it again. This is the very symbol of the power that fire has over nature, Freyr the god of fertility and light with his powers over the land, giving life to it, as we see all the landscapes around us filled with life, and when a great fire comes, in this case Surt, bringing death with him ( Hella ) burning all the land, and as Freyr will do, giving up his sword, refusing to fight the inevitable chaotic power that is too powerful to face, such as nature does, it has no powers to face the fires and it stands there, waiting to die and be consumed by it, just to rebirth after that in great beauty and stronger.

For those who want to call upon Surt and ask for his aid, Surt gives energy and courage, and the fire within all of us is lit, he is the very force that kindles the fire in all of us, that little spark that might spead into a great power which gives us the capacity to face all the hazards of life when we feel saddened and unmotivated. He can also be called upon for inspiration, for those who are musicians and those who are dancers, for all fire-etin love to dance and love to hear music.

Working with the gods: Kari

Few people have ever heard about Kari, but he is one very powerful spirit from the Northern Traditions, he is the god of the North Wind.
Every elemental has its power and importance, i have spoken a bit of each and how it can help us relaxing, but in this post, i will talk about Kari and his teachings and how his very presence gives us the glimpse of the few magic left in this world.

In the Norse mythology Kari is the Norse god of Wind and the oldest son of Mistblindi, an ancient frost giant also known as Fornjotr. Kari is a very powerful spirit, not only of the wind, snow and frost, but also he shows his powers in storms and blizzards. He is brother to Logi and Aegir, the ancient fire god and the lord of seas.

Those who work with him and have actually see him, know that through the year he changes, at spring he starts as a very young figure and as the year goes towards winter, he ages gradually till he becomes an old bearded man. This is a symbol of how the wind also changes from the very light cool breeze of spring, to the warmer soft wind of  summer ( speaking of the north countries ), till it changes in the bitter frost howling wind of winter bringing harsh blizzards wearing and killing nature, the natural cycle of wind. In his younger figure, he is like young men (as they used to be, not like nowadays of course ), in love, naive and innocent, cheerful, as we discover the wonders of life. However, he often appears to people in his older form, like a grandfather full of wisdom, but worn with the passage of time. When he is nothing working in what he does best, he is at his home in his cave in Niflheim. He his father to Frosti and Jokul, ( Frost and Icicle ) who is in turn father to Snaer ( Snow ) on of the chieftains of Niflheim. Snaer has four children, one son named Thorri ( Frozen-Snow ) and tree daughters, Fon, Drifa and Mjol ( Snowfall, Snowdrift and Powder ).
Frosti, seems to have married with an Alfar and so he entered into the Alfar family, his son is the half-Alfar Raum, whose son is Finnalf, one of the kings of Alfheim. Finnalf's niece married a mortal descendant of Kari's brother Logi, who was named after the fire-giant.

Kari is also a singer and he helps singers and also people with lung problems. As i have written before when i talked about the Element of Wind, air is a very important element for all living creatures, it is the very life you breath and flows in your body, and a deep long breath always helps to calm down a bit. As a singer, Kari teaches people how to use song as a powerful aid for many psychological problems, such as depressions, sadness etc. when someone sings, the air is inhaled and the voice comes out of our body as if it took out the evil away from us. The universe is an absolute silence, now imagine the first sounds to appear when a new world is formed, fire and ice are not the only fundamental things to create life, but also the sound of things is very important, is gives life and we know about the existance of things by the sound of each creature, each living being, every animal has its own voice, produced by the very air it inhales and exhales and the wind carries it.
You know of what i speak, without wind and atmosphere which retains the sound and spreads it, it was all a very annoying silence such as it happens in the universe, because there is no wind. The wind brings wonderful sounds, the soft breeze is gentle and blows a tuneful harmony, in spring it brings the seeds of plants and carries the singing of birds, it touches the leafs making a very relaxing and familiar sound. As the year approaches winter, the strong wind howls, bringing snow and storms, rain and cold, the sounds are different but magical and relaxing nonetheless.

Fire in Shamanism

Man has aways had a special relation with the fire element. It was through the light of fire, that man saw for the first time his reflection, the shadow of his own body reflected in the walls of the caves, he mistook it as the first hypothesis of this being his own soul. This shadowed reflection might have been one of the reasons that led the early human to start having another point of view about the world, and made him want to paint on the rocks his everyday activity and his relationship with the divine.

In this time, fire started to be the source of heat and illumination in the cold and dark days of winter, it was also the perfect element to change the raw animal meat into a new source of nourishment. Radical changes happen with the coming of fire, changes in their food, in their daily works, to explore new dark paths, to give light in the caves so they could paint and make other kids of art, to wander in the night and also a great change happened in terms of spirituality. Fire helped people to gather around it, and in this way, tribes were formed, and communities start to evolve and spread through the landscape. Mastering the art of the fire was a proof of passage to adulthood and a proof of survival. This also led to the sacred gathering of shamans around the fire, to discuss events and work together.
If we take a look at these shaman gatherings that still happen today, we can see how fire is important in this kind of situation, inside any Yurt, Tipi or other shaman tent. It is the fire that feeds the heat inside the tent, the sound of the crackling fire and the smoke, the first inducing process which heps in the altered state of consciousness or what we call, shamanic trance.
In shamanism, it is believed that the fire is the natural element which helps us to communicate with the spirits and our ancestors, because if you listen close enough, you might hear them speaking to you or with each other, and so the shaman before starting his work, he lights the fire. It is also in the heat of the fire, that the shaman prepares his drum, stretching the animal skin enough so that when hitting the drum, the sound may be similar to the heartbeat.
Fire was the first element that helped in the creation of the universe and our own world, fire was and still is one of the most important elements.

Sacred Space

There are many examples of sacred sites around the world that have special significante to particular societies: Stonehenge for the druids; Mount Olympus for the Greeks; the San Francisco Mountains for the native American Zuri tribe; the black hills of south Dakota for the plains tribes; and Uluru ( formerly known as Ayers Rock ) for the Australian tribes. These sites are usually powerful places associated with the ancestors, gods or spirits of a given culture. They are important to the collective psyche of the society. Sacred space approaches the concept on a more personal level.

Is there a place that you find especially conducive to meditation or relaxation? Perhaps a tree in a park or your garden, a certain rock outcrop or a wood where you often walk. Anywhere that you feel comfortable can be a sacred space, and that includes a place within yourself; sometimes it's not possible to travel physically to a special place to unwind just when you need to, so why not carry it with you?
The inner sacred space is a place that you create as a sanctuary, a retreat from the physical world, where you can relax and recoup your energy, so ir can resemble anything that makes you feel comfortable: a desert island, a hut on a mountain, a cave, anything. Maybe it's a place that you already know; somewhere you have visited in a dream or in this world. The more you visualize, the more real it will seem, so try to feel textures, see details, hear sounds and smell scents.
Your sacred space is a safe place and, because it is always there, you can visit it at any time. It can evolve as much as you want it to, because you created it and the control over it lies only with you. The only limitations are ones that you, as the maker, impose. So, be aware of what comes into being, for that can offer important insights into your subconcious. This private place is a good jumping-off point for beginning jounrneys.

Experiencing Nature

The natural world is a great place to find peace, tranquillity and inspiration, and to practise visualizing details to put inti your own sacred space. Get out as much as possible yo experience the benefits that a natural environment can bring. When out walking, be aware of your surroundings, admite the beauty of a tree or a bird in flight and always be grateful. Life is a precious gift to be appreciated now.
Nature can give us many things to help remind us of our connection - stones, feathers, sticks, intricate patterns and images - but if anything is taken, remember to leave something in return as an offering, an exchange of energy to signify your appreciation of the gift that has been given to you. Shamanism is about relating to the natural world and our place in it. Take time to stop, relax and meditate on the incredible complexity of the creation around you. Close your eyes and see how much sharper your other senses become. Extend that receptivity to feel the land, and blend with it. Feel what is around you: the vitality of the earth, the immensity of the world and the universe beyond. You are a part of it, be aware and accept the experience for what it is: humbling and precious.

Sound Therapy

Well friends, for those who have read the lable about the natural therapies and things you might do to help you out, your state of mind, or putting a depression to an end, you might consider this an other helpful way to achieve relaxation.

The sound therapy, as the name indicates, is all about the sounds you like the most, those sounds that give you a cosy feeling. Some people like the sound of rain and thunder, snow storms, or forests, birds singing, other like the sound of the city life, the cars and the movement of the people in the streets, or the far off sounds on the highway. So first of all, you have to find the sound or sounds that you like the most, the sounds that put you in a relaxation "mode" or gives you sleepiness, because it is all about the your psychological state. For instance, at the time of the year when the high summer comes, it is difficult to get some sleep, because it is too hot, so you might want to hear the sounds of winter, strong wind, snow storms, thunder and rain etc. if you try to sleep with these sounds on, you just have to imagine that you are in that place, and your mind transports you into a place, where you will no longer feel the heat of summer, and you will fall asleep with cold and you might want to get a blanket, or vs versa, at the winter time it is too cold, you can listen to the sound of a fire place and the wood burning and cracking, and in your mind, just imagine you are in that place, and it will be so out in your body, that in plane winter, you will not need to warm yourself with clothes or anything ( of course i'm talking to those that don't have a real fireplace at home ). These are just some exemples, of how your brain works, and the power of your mind, this is also a training, you can do these kind of everyday when going to sleep, and your body will be so used to this kind of psycological training, that when you are awake, you will not have any difficulty to endure anykind of weather, because your mind is so used to this, that you can travel in a daydream and relax.

Nowadays this kind of psycological training is very useful, the world is changing and the weather is not what it used to be, in some countries, there is just summer, and winter is just a passing shadow of its former self, the summers will get hotter and the winters cold, or people that were used to have a cool summer, or a mild climate at spring, will find these changes, very hard to endure.

You can find the sounds you like all over the internet, or you can record them yourself, or find them in a game, or something, that isn't hard.

Be strong of mind, and train your capability to transport your mind into a place that you like, when you aren't feeling well in the place you currently are.

Relaxing with Music

Most of us love to hear music, any kind any genre, and it helps us to relax.

One of the ways for a shaman to enter in trance, is with music, the beating of the drum and the rhythm it produces, i have talked about this too many times so i will not give too much importance to it now. But imagine how it all began, how the musical instruments were found and made, by the bones of animals to make flutes, the sound of the bow to start making harps and lyres, the drums made of wood and animal skin. Music started with a very close connection to the natural and animal world, and together with the human skills, it was created the first sounds of music in the world that made people laught, dance, entering in bliss and ecstasy. But the rhythm has started long before the human beging made musical instruments, it has started with the beating of the heart, that is similar to the beating of the shaman drum, constante, and that may be the sound that made our ancestors creating an artificial instrument to make the same sound, because as you know, the beating of the heart is relaxing, and babys in their first months in the world, still like to hear it, to calm down and sleep.

But my purpose in this post, is to let you know my first expirience with music in a way of dreams and visions.

I have been a musician for a long time now, at the moment i have stop playing, but i hope to return soo. I have played many instruments and about 2 years ago, my girlfriend bought me an lyre, the sound is beautiful, and as a musicion, it was a great gift and i love to play it. But the first expririence i had with music in the way of having dreams and visions while listening a musical instrument, was with this lyre, i have played a lot on it but my girlfriend one day started to play on it for me, i was lying on the bed, and i was relaxed, my entire body longed for rest, and the beautiful sound of her fingers hiting the strings, well... i felt like a baby in a cradle. So my eyes were half closed, but between the view of my room and my grlfriend playing, there was a secound image, saw i was seeing two things at the same time, and it wasa forest, a very deep forest, and i was standing between the border of the forest and a large valley, with tall grass, very green and fresh, the sky was grey and the weather was wet. and i saw the grass moving, there was something in there that i could not see, coming towards me, and then it was closer, i closed my hands, ready to atacke whatever it was that was coming so fast in my direction, then when it was about less then one meter of me, it got out of the grass and looked at me, a wolf, with black fur, all in black but with kind eyes, it was looking at me and i to him, and then it turn his head to his right looking deep into the forest, and i have also looked, and there was a great mound and a huge rock on it,, and a very tall figure dressed in animal fur, with long black and brown hair, but a shadowy face. I heard in my head, his name was Dagda, it was a man, i hear the wolf speaking to me while i wasn't looking at him, he told me this and it was he who told me to look. then this misty view was gone and i could see my room and my girlfriend playing the lyre without this vision in front of them, blocking half of the view.

You know i study hard the Norse ways and the Norse gods, you can read this in my blog, that i am very into this matter, int othis subject, it is the religion and beliefs of my ancestors, and i keep going with it, but i didnt knew who this Dagda was, so i went searching, and i found that this name was real, those familiar with the Celtic Gods know it better, and it seems that Dagda is a very old gold, as old as the very first Celts at 1500 B.C/B.C.E.

Under the Cloak

Going under the cloak can be done for a short while or a long while, and it means basically that you literally get a blanket or a cloak and lie underneath it, and then depending on how extreme you want to make the thing, you put rocks on your chest, as the Druids used to do, to depress your breathing, and that alters your state. You can have your helpers cover you up with earth, all but just a small area on your face so you can still breathe, but you're going to be carbon-dioxide-stressed, because it isn't the same amount of oxygen, and it is stressful.
You want to have ground crew for this, so you can stay alive. They need to be able to very unobtrusively check on your physical well-being, to keep their energy to themselves, and be comfortable in the space. Warding is good if they can do it, but it's not always necessary. If you're going to go and do something like this you probably want to put up wards first anyway, however you see those things. The ground crew keeps checking that the blanket is still becoming moist from your breath. If you stay there for many hours, then you have to get used to the idea that you'll probably have to urinate, so you might want to dig a shallow grave or trench and lay there on a sheet and have it all covered over except for the breathing part of your face. You can be there for twenty hours if necessary. The Earth is quite a good insulator, and it's a weird experience.
Traditionally it's three whole days, but that's pretty severe and rarely done. You can do a whole long fast before that so you don't have any issue with solids, but you will urinate. You need water; if it's less than 18 hours you can do without as long as you don't have any heart, kidney or bladder problems; you won't do irrevocable damage, but for more than that you need water. We modern people have soft bodies and we aren't used to hardship. So you would set up a little tube or a camelback that you could sip from without actually getting outside interference. But three days is excessive, for the most part. Overnight is more than enough for most people. We find that usually six hours is more than enough for most people, and you can certainly do without water for six hours.
The experience of having the earth on you is weird as well. The weight of it feels strange, and you also have the earth over the third eye part of your forehead. You get cramps and twitches, huge claustrophobia, panic attacks and weird sensations, even if you're not usually prone to it. You can't move, and you definitely get sore, and that's kind of part of the deal, detaching from that. Of course, spending three days under the earth is neither safe nor basic. But using a mummy bag for a few hours...even just spending the night sitting vigil in the woods is enough to creep most people out. And that's not a bad thing...getting a good fear on will put you into an altered state.
In contrast, float tanks are great, but that's very high comfort. When I do a float tank, I kind of feel like I'm cheating, because it's not hard at all. It's really nice. It's dark and weird and creepy and you can't distinguish the boundary of your body from the water. You can also make a modern witches' cradle or cat's cradle out of a good army surplus hammock and just tie it up, but I've found it rather time-inefficient.
We do a thing where we just stopper up the ears and the eyes and put a hood on and get in a mummy bag and be wrapped up with duct tape. If you have someone who is adequately knowledgeable about bondage, you can do it as being tied up. Make sure that there's plenty of room for circulation. Or use a big sack, a mailbag or spandex body bag, and a darkened room, and just lay there. The first hour, you'll feel silly. The second hour you'll feel silly and uncomfortable. The third hour you'll feel silly and uncomfortable and claustrophobic, but after that it starts getting interesting. It's a very labor-intensive way of doing things. But the key things are regulating and/or limiting the breath, sensory deprivation, and doing awareness exercises, and the length of time that it goes on.

The Sauna - Fire and Water

"Saunassa ollaan kuin kirkossa."
-Finnish saying: You should be in the sauna as in a church.

For the northern European peoples, a hot room full of steam was the best way to get clean. When half their year is bitterly cold, enough that it would be impractical to be wet and naked for very long, being in a tub of water in a drafty longhouse isn't a good idea. Unless living next to hot springs - which were sacred places and much revered - the best choice is to build a separate small building (or a small space within a large one) where you can heat things up and encourage your body to sweat out impurities. If you lay a supply of rocks into it, heat them, and throw water on them, you get the cleansing steam that the Finns refer to as
löyly.
While the sauna is mostly associated with the Finnish people these days, we know from archaeological digs that ancient cultures all over the arctic and subarctic regions of Eurasia used them to one extent or another. In northern Europe, the oldest ones were small domed stone buildings with a hole in the top, rather like a permanent stone version of the Native American sweat lodge. Somewhat later ones were round or squarish stone buildings; occasionally a Norse longhouse would have a separate small room that seems to have been a bathhouse. In the Eyrbyggja Saga, a Norse bathhouse is described that is a room dug into the ground, or perhaps the side of a hill. A window over a stone oven, just at ground level, provided both ventilation and a place to pour water over the stones.

The word sauna is Saami, the language of the original inhabitants of Finland. We don't necessarily know what the various Scandinavian and Slavic cultures called a bathhouse, because the modern words are more recent in their etymology, such as the German Aufguss and the Russian banya (which was originally derived from an Italian word for bath). However, some linguists have pointed out that the Old Germanic word stofa, which is where we get our modern word "stove", originally meant a heated bathhouse and may have been the equivalent word for the Finnish sauna. It later evolved into the German Stube, which became Badstube or bathhouse.

During the Middle Ages, public bathhouses went from being family and tribal retreats to being busy centers of commerce and prostitution. The Catholic Church finally cracked down and banned them, and so the sauna and its various forms were lost to most places west of Finland for a long time, until those countries rediscovered the health benefits of the sauna in later centuries. This interruption via first civilization and second Christianity means that we have very little in the way of remaining lore about the religious rituals of the stofa. We can conjecture from the scraps left behind, especially those remaining in Finnish and Russian culture, or we can ask the wights and work them out ourselves, which is what some people have done.

As far as we can tell, one of the primary religious functions of the sauna in Finland - and likely in the rest of northern Europe as well - was as a holy place of transition. Women were brought into the sauna to give birth, and the dying often lived out their last days there. Once dead, their bodies were washed and wrapped in the sauna before removing them to a grave. It was also used for secluding one's self for such things as casting charms and spells, and healing rituals of all sorts were performed there on various sufferers. Indeed, the ill were often brought into the sauna for the duration of their illness. In Russian folklore, sorcerers both good and bad were said to practice there, doing things unacceptable to normal society in that in-between space. Similarly, stillborn children were buried under the threshold to protect them and guard their spirits - like baptizing them without a baptism.

Ancestor worship was also a function of the sauna; it was thought that the Dead would return to places that they had enjoyed, including the bathhouse, and that the löyly, or sacred steam, held their souls. It is the Breath of the Ancestors, a word which originally meant "spirit" or "life". (One cognate is the Ostyak word lil, which means "soul".) The sauna is, in many ways, an ancestor altar that is also useful. Its usefulness stretched to the mundane as well; it was sometimes used for such practical purposes as curing meat or drying out malt, hemp and flax. It was a doorway between worlds; the fact that fire and water held an equal balance in sauna sanctity drives home the image of liminal space.

The banya seems to have endured in Russia as well, although it is not as famous in the West as the Finnish sauna. Herodotus wrote about the people of the Black Sea region making a felt-covered hut and throwing water onto red-hot stones inside, creating a vapor hotter than any Hellenic bath. (He also relates that hempseed was thrown onto the stones for purposes of visions and prophecy.) According to his accounts, this Slavic sweat lodge was used for ritual cleansing before marriage and after burying the dead. 2nd-century excavations of Slavic settlements in Poland show earth-sheltered houses with fireplaces in the middle, but no separate bathhouses. The concept of building an actual permanent structure seems to have been unknown in the southern Slavic areas until the people of Novgorod moved south, as mentioned in the Lay of Igor's Campaign. Novgorod, a northern Slavic city, had been heavily settled by the Rus tribes, and was the mercantile capital of trade between them and the Norse. (There is a good deal of evidence to suggest that the Rus people, or at least their leaders/upper classes, were Varangian/Norse-descended. There is also some evidence to support opposing conclusions; the debate still rages. However, regardless of how Norse-descended they were, they were certainly Norse-influenced.) With archaeological evidence showing that the early Russian banya was basically identical to the Finnish sauna and the Norse equivalent, it is likely that it is an ancient import from the Rus settlers.

As the Catholic Church never held much sway in Russia (and the Orthodox Church never fixed on sweat-bathing as a moral problem), the tradition of the banya continued unabated, complete with its folk beliefs. The Russian Primary Chronicle describes, in 1113, the monk Andreas' observations of the banya practice in Novgorod wherein he described the pagans "drenching themselves":

As today, this does show the sauna as an ordeal of heat. In many ways, sauna-work is poised on the edge between the Ascetic's Path and the Ordeal Path, depending on how hot it is, and for what purpose it is used - purification, community bonding, creation of sacred space, or strength ordeal? When performed as a group rite, it partakes of the Path of Ritual as well. A multipurpose tool, the House of the Ancestors can be all of these. A community sweat is very different from using the sauna as a safe and sacred place to give birth, and even more different from using it as a solo purification and sacred-space creator for a spirit-worker.

If well tended and kept holy, it could also be a source of power to call upon. The Russian Primary Chronicle also tells of Princess Olga, the pagan widow of Prince Igor of Kiev, who punished the Derevlians for the murder of her husband in 945 A.D. Their leader had designs on her, considering her to be booty earned by the murder, and sent messengers to discuss their future marriage. Olga invited the Derevlian messengers to use her banya, and while they were inside, her men barred the doors and burned the banya to the ground with the Derevlians in it.

Another way in which the Russian banya was a peripheral space was the tradition that sorcerers had to be brought there to die. (Keep in mind that many of the medieval descriptions of a "sorcerer" sound more like a shaman - they had spirit allies, they had to complete their sorcerous transition or die, and so forth.) It was said that a wizard's spirit would be unquiet if they could not pass on their knowledge, so the banya offered a protected space for them to teach their heirs without the "magic" leaking and accidentally conveying their gifts to the unsuspecting, and also a place where their spirit would be sent firmly on its way by the power of the banya in case there were no heirs. This association with wizards (and with pagan beliefs; the banya is said to be the vtoroi mat, or second mother, referring to its symbolism as a small temple to Mokosh the Earth Mother) caused later Russian Christians to say that the bathhouse was full of devils and unquiet ghosts. In general, Russian sorcerers (referred to as koldun) were said to go off to thebanya when all the good Christians were going off to church. Besides the idea of the bathhouse being a private place to work magic, this comment reinforces the idea of the banya as a holdover from the pagan temple. Because of this, anyone who snuck off to the banya alone at odd times might be accused of sorcery, especially if they visited after midnight, which was when the spirits (evil or otherwise) took over the building.
The banya was also a place for prophecy and divination, as well as healing and rites of passage. According to folk belief, babies were born there because birthing women and newborns were terribly vulnerable to evil forces, and the guardian spirit of the banya was so strong that it kept all other spirits at bay. Bringing a child into the bathhouse would, for some reason, earn the favor of the domovoi and domikha, the male and female spirits of the house itself. One custom supposedly had the midwife stripping naked and carrying the newborn child around the banya, chanting an invocation to the Morning Star to keep the child from crying. As a house of both the living and the Dead, this was the place for seeing the Dead off on their way. Forty days after a funeral - during which time water, vodka and towels were left in the banya for the dead soul - the fire was lit and a feast prepared for them. Afterwards, the family walked out of the bathhouse and crossed the road, ceremonially sending the dead soul away.
Specific ritual dates associated with the banya were Mokosh's holiday - said to be in the late fall after the harvest when winter was beginning; one could possibly assume around the western-European festival of Samhain - and Yule, when pre-marriage prophecies were sought and made. (At any time of the year, brides were sent to the bathhouse to have a pre-wedding purification steam bath the night before the nuptials, and at least one source suggests that the village sorcerer or shaman was in charge of such ceremonies.) From all its associations, it is clear that the bathhouse in these cultures took the place of the sacred temple or grove once Christianity took over. Having a small building on one's property that could also be used for quite practical tasks provided the average peasant with a place to store all the reverence, memories, and suspiciously magical practices left over from a pagan past.

The Earth Element

Note: The Painting to Illustrate this was made by me.

The Earth Element, it is the very ground you live in, the very place you make your daily life, all the other elements together and their powers, make this last one, the forces of chaos, harmony, beauty, power and energy, combined, make the perfect natural heaven.

The Earth is the home and origin of humanity, and has often been worshipped in its own right with its own unique spiritual tradition, for thousands of generations.
All over the world, many people from many diferent cultures have worshiped the natural elements, and even for the shamans, it was and is a goal to master them, at least the knowledge they possess.

As i have always said and written about, we must respect nature and its powers, when its fury is awakened, it has the most destructive powers we have ever seen, and there is no way to stop it, but also it has the most wonderful natural beauty, we must preserve the places were we live in, we must respect and be glad, and try to change the ways of the humanity, and led them into a more respectful way, with conscience, with the knowledge that we need this world to survive. Many think that in ancient times, humans were dependend 100% of nature, and needed it to survive, that is why most of the pagan religions of old, are turned to a great respect and careful way to deal with nature because humans depended on it to live, and that today we dont need it anymore and we dont depend of it, and that is a wrong thought and selfish! We always depend on it to live, the very air we breath, all we eat, the water that flows in our body, the ancients knew it better, to respect and take care of nature, for it without respect will turn its wrath against us, that is the way of things, and we see that today, the works of our own, not natural ones, the lack of attention and respect and care, has led us to a era of the world, were we are in constant danger and fear, the world is breaking and its vey fundations are being torn asunder. But we still have a chance to deal with this, making the diference, every day teaching others and our own children to respect nature and do everything they can not to ruin it, as i always say, do not fill the children's mind with nonsense and rubbish, without a specific religion, politics etc.

The Earth as a
therapy has many strands that you can find for yourself, meditation in a beautiful place, even just looking at it, the sond of the runing waters, the deep forest music, the singing of birds, all is a part of nature, even the simplest thing to make a sand castle, to creat something out of clay, moving your hands into soft material, relaxation is the goal of it. Find for yourself the many ways you can contact with nature and be also a part of it, because we descended from it and we will turn to it one day, be in harmony and take a while just to listen the sounds that nature produces.

Things you can do without religion

The things you can do for the world, for yourself and the community you live in, and there is no need for relegion, i will write them in here, of course there will be much more you can do, just take a thought on it, i will also talk about things you can do that will please the gods but it you leave you happy and you will do much for the world, working with the gods without even knowing it.

Things you can do without religion:

To start, you can make the ritual that will help the green land around you and you dont need to have a specific religion, take a bag with you, go into the green places you know, they can be public or not, parks, woodland, forests etc. and the filth people leave behind, those mindless monkeys, you can pick the trash and put it in the bag, and throw it into the right place, the proper containers.

Dont waste anything, not even toys and clothes, there are people in need and they will need those, children,
homeless people and other, dont waste, give it to them, i am sure that were you live in, the big city, there are also containers for that, or you can go to an institution and give to them, clothes, toys, furniture etc.
Dont waste food, that is very important, consume what you can, and the
leftovers you keep them to eat the next day, also food like fruit what its left of it, it's "skin" like the banana, orange, pear, apple etc. those are organic waste, you can give it back to the earth, it will fertilize the ground, of course you cant throw it wherever you like, just in the green places, it will give some "strength" to the land.

Help the public parks around you, to grow beautiful and green, let nature do its works, dont let people throw away the garbadge into the ground, dont let them put their cars in it, warn the proper
authorities, they have the power to do something about it, i'm not just talking about the police, but also to those who take care of your parks in your city or town.

Energy! Dont waste it! dont leave your TV or other electronic stuff on when no one is there to use it, after you  turn off your tv or computer etc. take it off the plug or buy those that have a button that you can turn eveything off and go away in
safety.

When anything is not right in your street, take a photo and send it to your town hall, into the respective place where they can do somethign about it.

It is also important to reclicle!

Be in favour to the renewable energies and agriculture!

Dont consume the animals from the
supermarkets, they are killed in mass and in horrible ways, at least try not consuming that everyday, give a time for the vegetables, fruit and soup!
Instead of
buying an animal in a strore, go to the kennels and adopt an animal, even if he is too old, give him a home, a shelter, a cozy and warm place and give him love, let his last days in this earth be in peace and gladness, protect the animals, they can't defend themselves, they are often harmless.

Love your family, ang give love, respect others' opinions, know how to listen. Honor your friends and family, they will one day be your ancestors and so will you be the ancestor of someone, give love, care, respect.

Teach your children with good values, to respect nature and others, to respect life, dont fill their minds with religion, politics, football clubs etc. let them choose for their own, teach them to be polite and how to live in honor.

Things you can also do with or without religion:

There are somethings you can do that will please the gods, but you can also do without any religion, no matter what you belive, it will be good for you and for your community.

Here it goes a list of somethings:

Clean the beaches, dont let the water take the waste into the sea, that will save many animals and yourself, every year thousands of animals are traped in the wastes we throw into the water, many die in horrible ways. Help in this, that will please the Sea Gods.

Many animals die because its hard nowadays to find shelter, the growing of the city takes away many species, the lack of trees makes the work even harder, give yourself a shelter to the animals in need, especially at winter, buy or build a wooden box for birds, for bats, or one large to put food so other creatures near by can eat, like squirrels, owls etc. Many will come to live there and the lost species will return, keep the trees and the many green places you can in your town and even in the city, and you will see in time, that many diferent animals return.

Honoring the Gods of Nature and Agriculture such as Frey the Nordic God -
Directly participate in raising the food that nourishes you and your family. If you don't have the means to garden, or keep a few chickens, then perhaps you could do some work for someone who does in exchange for some of the food, or volunteer.

Learn, and teach others, how to cook wholesome foods from ingredients you can afford.

Plant trees!
Bake bread, or brew beer, and share it with your family.
Make a commitment to consistently buy a basic food item (such as butter, flour, or breakfast cereal) organic and sustainably raised.
Shop at a local farmers market or buy directly from a small local family farm, especially an organic one.

To Honor the Death gods such as Hela from the Nordic Pantheon - Live life well! Accepting who you are, respecting nature and taking care of it, teaching others to do the same, live your life as if you weren't live throughout the year, what would your priorities be? Live that way at least part of every year.

Dont waste! As i have tould before. To throw something away because it is ugly or imperfect is waste, and perhaps someone who cannot afford the best would be grateful for the imperfect. Give away and recycle everything you can. Throw away only what would be rejected even by the desperate.

In judgement you will be judged not by how you behave towards those you love and respect, but by how you behave towards those you hate and hold in contempt.

Support Green Burial. Lobby for green cemeteries in your area.
Choose green burial or cremation. Don't add to the poison in the Earth with your death.

Volunteer at a hospice program. Volunteer to sit with a dying elder who is being cared for at home so that their caretakers can get a few hours away to do necessary things. Volunteer to help and talk to terminally ill patients, at home or in a hospital. Do not be afraid of or disgusted by those who are soon to pass over.

Volunteer to clean road-kill off the roads. Say a prayer for the spirits of the dead animals.

The elemental Air

Note: The artwork is a painting i've made long ago, you can watch all my works at my Portfolio or in this [Link]

Air is seen as an unirversal power, a pure substance, it is fundamental for life.
People often belive in what they can see or touch, but just like the air element, it is there, you can feel it, and you know it exists, you breathe it, my point is, things are there, just because you dont see them, it doesnt mean they dont exist.
But now back to the subject, air is everywhere, all living things breathe it, especially plants and trees, that filter the air and give us oxygen, it flows in our lungs, making the blood pulse to the heart, and it beats, it goes to our brain, making it work, so we can feel, move, think, live, even the fishes breath oxygen, not like the marine mammals
such as whales but, the fishes have evolved in such a way as to not require frequent trips to the surface to breathe air. Fish have developed gills, on which they rely for the oxygen necessary for a fish's limited metabolism. Many animals have gills at some stage of their life (even humans have them at an early stage of their development in the womb), but fish retained these gills and they are still a functional part of their anatomy. Fish use their gills to extract oxygen from their watery environment. So air is a source of life, and just like the other elements i've written about, all combined, make the perfect natural harmony.
Have you ever Seen the wind in the grass?, it seems as invisible serpents are walking in there, feels like magic.
The air element as a therapy has unlimited ways, you can go outside and feel the cold winter wind in your face, open your arms and breath it, or even in a forest, like most of us do nowadays, breathing deep that natural air without pollution, you will feel much better, feel the soft breeze at spring time, it isnt cold nor hot, watch how the leaves in the trees dance with the wind, the sound it makes, air also brings the snow and the rain, the strong wind in the mountains comes down and entangles in your hair, and goes round all around you, embrace it, welcome it, it is speaking to you, the air is also compared with the spirit or spirits, if you listen close enough, you can hear it speaking to you, find for your self diferent ways to work with the elemental air, and to achieve relaxation with it.
Always remember to respect the elements, respect nature and its wonderful works, by respecting it, you will also respect yourself and life.

Water Element

Note: The Photo was taken By Missloony all rights reserved. By clicking on her name, you can watch her Deviantart or at her blog in HealingByLiving

The water Element, it runs through the very veins of the earth, deep into the oceans and rivers, it is a self sustaining resource in that it can create itself through a cycle. It is created by oxygen which is the most common element of the earth's crust and hydrogen is the most common element of the universe, so it is almost inevitable that the two molecules would find each other and form bonds, and now that water is creaded, in the lakes and oceans is evaporated by the heat of the sun and forms a vapour that joins together to form clouds. When the temperature is warm enough, the vapour condenses into drops which is what rain is made out of. The rain falls onto the earth, into the land as well as back into oceans, lakes and rivers. From the water bodies it evaporates and the cycle starts all over again.
This element, is an emotional element, it provokes emotions on the human mind, that in turn is reflected on the body. We always think about water, as a wet and cold element, but it can prove very useful in terms of relaxation. Many dont like the rain or the sound of it, it gives them a dreadful chill in their soul, and
depression. For those who love the rain and the sounds it makes falling on the earth, trees and their leaves, know better how it calms, especially if you are indoors. Others may find alternative ways of relaxation with water, try taking a shower or a long bath with hot water, and when your body is warm enough, wash your entire body with cold water, the shock is a realy good and natural therapy for your heart and it helps the blood run in your veins, or you can do the same but washing progressively with water less hot then the first one, and so on till it reaches the cold, you will feel nothing because your body is too warmed up, when it starts to cool down, the sensation is outstanding. Also if you know and like to swim, you can dive deep in a pool, "sliding" in the bottom and come back up, exercise your body and your lungs, it helps you in breathing problems and, exercising your body, it will help you in locomotion problems and ofcourse in spine problems, Swiming is the greatest sport you can make, it is good for your health in every way, and you feel the freedom of your movements, outside the water you will feel lighter.

Of Fire and Mischief

NOTE: The Picture was taken by MissLoony, All Rights Reserverd.

I will talk about the Natural Elements and today the subject is the elemental fire and the importance it has even as a therapy.
The Fire is the source of all creation, it all began with it, i see fire as a living creature, that breathes to live and eats or consumes all arround, so it can grow, it moves, it pulses with life. Fire can be a cosy friend but also a terribel enemy, above all else, when working with it, we must have the utmost care and respect it.
The fire as a therapy is like magic upon our minds, try to sit or lay near a bonfire or a fireplace, in a chair or bed, close your eyes
and listen the crackling of the fire, imagine yourself in a distante place, beautiful, dreamlike, near a river or in the mountains, the wind is cold, you feel inside your heart, the bliss , you feel warmer, or you can even think about a place inside a wooden house, snow outside with the sound of the wind blowing hard and the yelp of the wolves. You will fall asleep and have a great rest upon your pillow. Of course you can imagine thousands of situations at the sound of the crackling fire.
Just like the God Loki, he has an outstanding power and skills over fire, and he gained all this knowledge with the Giant Surt the black of Muspellheim, surffice to say, he is the lord of fire. But that is another story for an other post. And speaking of Loki, i avail what i have said, to speak about it, many people see him as the devil of the christian myths, i can tell you, that is a mistake often taken, in the Norse Mythology there are no evil gods, each one has his purpose, his own skills, powers and doings, Loki is the God of Mischief, fire, magic, shapeshifting and cunning, and all of us in our daily lifes, when working with other persons, we have to be cunning, eyes opened, or the society will "eat us alive", also we have to shapeshift, not like loki, but in a metaphorical way, play a bit, not with evil purposes, or to gain things we want and pass over others, but in a way so we can help others and ourselves, it is easy to make evil, and hard to do good, that is the true lesson and the real task.
